A 15-year-old boy died Sunday after being injured in an off-road ATV crash near the San Joaquin riverbed in Fresno County.
CHP received a delayed report around 6:30 p.m. about a crash involving a Can-Am ATV near Highway 180 and San Mateo Avenue.
Investigators said two 15-year-old boys were riding eastbound along the riverbank when the driver lost control. Both were ejected into shallow water and the vehicle overturned, landing on the passenger, who was not wearing a helmet.
A witness removed the ATV and contacted the boy’s aunt, who declined immediate medical assistance. The boy, initially alert, was taken to a Mendota residence. He later began experiencing severe internal pain and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was wearing a helmet. CHP said the family is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
