LOS ANGELES, CA (November 7, 2024) – Motorists on the 5 Freeway faced a frustrating and treacherous morning drive on Wednesday, with multiple crashes involving semi-trucks bringing traffic to a standstill.
The first incident was reported shortly before 5 a.m. on the southbound side of the 5 Freeway at Roxford Street in Sylmar. According to local news agencies, the crash involved a big rig and another vehicle that flipped over the center divider, ending up on the northbound side.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “pretty dramatic” as first responders arrived and commuters slowly navigated around the crash site. The vehicle that hopped the center divider was pinned between the divider and the trailer of the semi-truck. It is believed that up to seven cars were involved in the initial collision, and a small fluid spill was also reported from the big rig.
The multi-vehicle crash in LA resulted in a SigAlert being issued, with the backup on the southbound 5 extending past the 14 Freeway, which itself was backed up to the Sand Canyon exit. As of 8:15 a.m., delays on the 14 South stretched all the way back to Soledad Canyon Road. To add to the commuting woes, a car fire was also reported on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway, creating another delay for drivers heading out of the San Fernando Valley.
Approximately two hours later, a second crash involving a semi-truck occurred near the interchange of the 5 and 118 Freeways in San Fernando. Local news agencies reported that the driver of the big rig had to be extricated by first responders and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. This second incident prompted authorities to block off every lane on the southbound side except for the carpool lane, leading to miles-long traffic backups.
These devastating crashes have left motorists across the region facing an exceptionally difficult and time-consuming commute. As the investigations into the causes continue, drivers are urged to exercise caution and stay vigilant on the roads.
