SANTA MONICA, CA (October 18, 2024) – A woman was killed late Thursday night in Santa Monica Beach after being struck by an SUV driven by a suspected drunk driver. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the Santa Monica Pier, according to police reports.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old YuYang Sun of Arcadia, was reportedly driving his 2015 Infiniti SUV at high speeds in circles on the beach when he lost control and ran over the victim, who was possibly sleeping on the sand at the time. Emergency responders arrived to find the SUV stuck in the sand with the woman, believed to be homeless, trapped underneath. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sun was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, and gross vehicular manslaughter as investigations into the DUI crash in Santa Monica Beach continue.
