BAKERSFIELD, CA (October 18, 2024) – A devastating collision between a police patrol car and a civilian vehicle resulted in two fatalities and left a toddler critically injured in East Bakersfield at the intersection of Kern and Niles streets. According to eyewitnesses, the civilian vehicle was speeding north on Kern Street, ran a stop sign, and collided with the westbound BPD cruiser, which did not have a stop sign.
The driver of the civilian vehicle was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. An adult female passenger was also transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Additionally, a 2-year-old child from the civilian vehicle is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
The police officers involved sustained minor injuries and were described as alert and conversational. The officers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Local residents from Freedom House, a sober living home, displayed remarkable heroism by assisting the officers and other crash victims. Some aided the disoriented officers and helped to manage the crash scene until additional police could secure the area.The cause of the East Bakersfield car crash, beyond the apparent high speed of the civilian vehicle, is still under investigation, with toxicology reports pending for the civilian victims.
