OCEANSIDE, CA (October 28, 2024) – A head-on collision on state Route 76 in Oceanside involving a suspected DUI driver resulted in one fatality and left another driver injured Saturday night, according to police reports.
The incident reportedly happened just before 9:30 p.m. west of Melrose Drive, where a man in his 30s, driving a tan Buick Century in the wrong direction on the eastbound lane, struck a white Honda Clarity. The Buick driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 20-year-old female driver of the Honda sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Palomar Hospital in Escondido for treatment.
The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation into the DUI crash on SR-76 in Oceanside, with initial evidence suggesting that impairment due to alcohol or drugs was a contributing factor. Traffic was halted for approximately two and a half hours as emergency responders cleared the site.
