One Dead, Infant Injured in Five-Car Crash Near Ceres

CERES, CA (September 22, 2024) — A five-car collision near Ceres on Saturday afternoon left a 26-year-old man dead and an 11-month-old child with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Highway 132 near River Road. The 26-year-old Ceres resident was driving eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he turned left, crossed double yellow lines, and entered the westbound lane, the CHP reported.
His vehicle sideswiped one car before colliding head-on with another traveling westbound. The car struck head-on and braked, leading to a rear-end collision with a fourth vehicle. A fifth car was also involved in the incident.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant passenger in another vehicle was transported to the hospital with major injuries, while four others sustained minor injuries.
Highway 132 was closed between River Road and Gates Road during the investigation and reopened around 3:10 p.m. Authorities have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in the car crash near Ceres.
The CHP reminds parents and caregivers that California law requires children under two to be secured in a rear-facing car seat.
