Pedestrian Fatality Disrupts I-15 Traffic in San Diego [San Diego, CA]

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 8, 2024) — A tragic incident on northbound Interstate 15 disrupted traffic Wednesday afternoon when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle, leading to significant lane closures. 

The San Diego pedestrian accident occurred just after 1:45 p.m. near the Tierrasanta neighborhood, between Friars Road and Aero Drive exits, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Authorities arrived at the scene to find a 28-year-old San Diego man in the traffic lanes, who had been hit by a Honda Element. Despite efforts, the pedestrian succumbed to major injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His identity is withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the Honda, a 33-year-old man from Chula Vista, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No other injuries were reported. The incident led to the closure of the left three lanes of I-15 for several hours, causing major delays during the evening commute.

By 5:45 p.m., Caltrans announced the reopening of all lanes, though the investigation into the crash continues. Authorities are awaiting a toxicology report to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.
