Pilot Injured as Small Plane Crashes into El Cajon Neighborhood

EL CAJON, CA (April 29, 2024) — A small plane crashed into a residential area in El Cajon on Sunday evening, narrowly avoiding homes and causing a power outage. The incident occurred around 6:27 p.m. near Lily Avenue and Clarke Drive, as reported by Heartland Fire & Rescue.
The pilot, who was attempting to reach Gillespie Field just 2 1/2 miles away, experienced a critical drop in oil pressure leading to engine failure. Fortunately, the pilot managed an emergency landing on a sidewalk close to power lines and residential structures. He was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries including a laceration to his head, several broken teeth, and a split lip.
Over 1,000 local residents experienced power disruptions due to downed lines, which have since been secured by SDG&E. The area was quickly cordoned off as emergency services responded to the scene.
El Cajon Police are working with the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the cause of the El Cajon plane crash. Witnesses, including fellow pilot Sean McGurrell, noted the pilot’s quick response and skilled handling of the emergency situation.
