Recruit Firefighter Fatally Struck in Hit-and-Run on 101 Freeway

STUDIO CITY, CA (April 16, 2024) — A tragic accident claimed the life of a rookie firefighter on the 101 Freeway in Studio City early Monday morning.
The Los Angeles Fire Department has confirmed that 22-year-old Jacob Fuerte was the victim of the incident, which occurred at 5:14 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Vineland Avenue.
LAFD Captain Erik Scott explained that Fuerte, en route to a training session, likely exited his vehicle following a minor traffic collision to assess the situation and possibly render aid. During this time, he was struck by another vehicle that fled the scene. Despite rapid response from paramedics, Fuerte was pronounced dead at the location.
LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley expressed her sorrow, noting Fuerte’s recent initiation into a firefighting career marked by bravery and selflessness.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family during this most difficult time,” Crowley said in a statement. Fuerte, who was in the 10th week of a 20-week training program, comes from a family deeply rooted in firefighting, with his father serving as an LAFD veteran for 17 years.
The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating the firefighter accident in Studio City as a hit-and-run and urges anyone with information to contact their West Valley Office at (818) 888-0980. Fuerte is mourned by his father, two sisters, and a brother.
