Redwood City Man Killed in Two-Part Crash on Highway 101

REDWOOD CITY, CA (June 1, 2024) — A Redwood City man died after being involved in a two-part car crash on Highway 101 early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Redwood City. The man initially survived a solo crash but was killed in a subsequent collision about 20 minutes later.
The first crash occurred at 2:56 a.m. when the man, driving a red Hyundai northbound on Highway 101 north of San Antonio Road, crashed into a pole. The CHP described this incident as a solo crash resulting in property damage only.
Following the crash, the red Hyundai became disabled and blocked the fourth lane of the highway. The driver exited the vehicle for unknown reasons, the CHP reported.
Approximately 20 minutes later, the Golden Gate Communication Center (GGCC) received notification of a second crash involving the red Hyundai. This collision involved the Hyundai, a Scion, and a Freightliner truck.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Scion, traveling northbound in the fifth lane, encountered debris from the Hyundai and attempted to change lanes, colliding with the Hyundai and pushing it into the fourth lane.
Shortly after, a Freightliner traveling in the fifth lane tried to avoid the two-vehicle crash but ended up hitting both vehicles. The driver of the Hyundai was killed in this second collision.
No injuries were reported from the Scion, and the Freightliner driver declined immediate medical transportation, opting to seek his own medical aid later. The investigation into the Redwood City crash is ongoing.
