San Diego to Pay $7 Million to Family of Cyclist Injured in Old Town

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 28, 2024) — The city of San Diego has agreed to pay $7 million to the family of a cyclist who was severely injured while riding in a shared bike lane in Old Town. Marc Woolf was cycling home from his job at the San Diego Zoo when a car backed into the road on Congress Street. Woolf collided with the vehicle, was thrown from his bike into oncoming traffic, and was then struck by a second car.
According to the civil lawsuit filed in 2022, Woolf was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of the crash and later died from his injuries. The complaint states that both drivers were operating within the speed limit.
It attributes the San Diego bicycle crash to dangerous road conditions, including restricted sight lines due to physical obstructions, insufficient red curbs to prohibit parking, overgrown vegetation, confusing shared lane markings, and a malfunctioning streetlight on the night of the incident.
This case is among several in which San Diego has faced substantial payouts due to hazardous conditions affecting cyclists. The city council is expected to finalize the settlement agreement at a meeting on October 1.
