Teen Driver Dies in Tragic Bakersfield Canal Crash

BAKERSFIELD, CA (September 30, 2024) — A 16-year-old boy from Lamont lost his life early Sunday morning after his car plunged into a canal in southwest Bakersfield, authorities report. The incident, involving a 2014 Toyota, happened at around 1:22 a.m. on Cottonwood Road, just south of Panama Lane.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the scene following reports of a vehicle underwater. Their preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle was traveling southbound when it unexpectedly veered off the road in a southwesterly direction, resulting in the fatal crash.
The young driver sustained severe injuries and was declared deceased at the site. Two other occupants, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, managed to escape the submerged vehicle. The CHP is currently investigating whether substances played a role in this tragic Bakersfield canal crash.
