Teen Mardenia Carillo Lopez Killed, Mother Injured in Oakland Hit-and-Run

OAKLAND, CA (August 21, 2024) — A 17-year-old girl was killed, and her mother injured in an Oakland hit-and-run incident involving an allegedly intoxicated driver. The collision happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday near 72nd Avenue and International Boulevard while Mardenia Carrillo Lopez and her mother were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
Mardenia died at the scene. Her mother sustained injuries to her hand and shoulder. The suspect driver fled the scene but later crashed into a tree a few blocks away on International Boulevard near 84th Avenue.
The driver, identified as Agusto Matias, was apprehended by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies with the assistance of witnesses and has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and DUI. Matias has a history of DUI offenses.
Mardenia’s father, Leonel Carillo, expressed his grief and described his deep bond with his daughter during a vigil held by their church community. Mardenia, who recently enjoyed a trip to San Francisco with her family, is remembered fondly by friends and the local community.
The tragic incident highlights ongoing safety concerns along International Boulevard, where reduced traffic lanes have led to increased risks of accidents.
