Three Dead in Motorcycle Crash Near Camp Pendleton
ORANGE COUNTY, CA (June 27, 2024) — Three motorcyclists died in a crash on southbound Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton early Thursday, prompting a closure of all southbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision was reported around 3 a.m. south of Las Pulgas Road. A jeep swerved into the guardrail, disabling it in the southbound lanes. A Mercedes van then struck the jeep and overturned, leading to a chain reaction crash involving four motorcyclists who collided with the van, CHP Officer Hunter Gerber said.
Traffic backed up to Orange County as all southbound lanes were closed, with vehicles being diverted off at Las Pulgas Road. A SigAlert was issued to manage the situation. The van’s driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. CHP is conducting an ongoing investigation into the motorcycle crash near Camp Pendleton.
