Three Dead, Two Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 46 East

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (July 31, 2024) — A wrong-way crash on Highway 46 East near Shandon killed three people and seriously injured two others late Sunday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. when 30-year-old Saundra Foutz of Paso Robles, driving a 2021 Mercedes westbound in the eastbound lane, collided head-on with a 2022 Honda. A second eastbound vehicle, a 2015 Honda, then crashed into the wreckage.
The first Honda’s driver and two passengers, a 24-year-old woman from Cutler, a 32-year-old woman from Sanger, and a 27-year-old man from Reedley, died from their injuries. Their identities are withheld pending notification of their families.
Foutz and the fourth passenger in the first Honda, 28-year-old Carlos Quinonez of Orange Cove, sustained major injuries and were transported to hospitals. Foutz underwent surgery and is currently in recovery.
Jess Lopez, the 38-year-old driver of the third vehicle from Bakersfield, sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized. CHP Officer Patrick Seebart stated that impairment is being investigated, but no alcohol was found at the scene.
