Tragic Freeway Incident Claims Lives of Two Caltrans Workers
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (May 7, 2024) — Two Caltrans workers lost their lives in a devastating accident on the 71 Freeway in Chino, San Bernardino County, when a box truck collided with their crew. The incident happened at around 8:37 a.m. Monday, in the northbound lanes near South Euclid Avenue.
The crew was engaged in maintenance activities, with two workers inside a van parked on the right shoulder and seven others cleaning the embankment beyond the guardrail. The northbound white box truck side-swiped the van, subsequently lost control, and crashed through the guardrail, striking two workers on the embankment.
One worker died at the scene, while the other succumbed to severe injuries at a local hospital. Another Caltrans employee in the van sustained minor injuries. Authorities confirmed the box truck driver passed a sobriety test, indicating no drugs or alcohol were involved.
The driver is reportedly cooperating with ongoing investigations. No criminal charges have been announced related to the Caltrans worker accident as of this writing.
