Two Critically Injured After Small Plane Crashes Near Hawthorne Airport

HAWTHORNE, CA (September 6, 2024) — A small plane crash near Hawthorne Municipal Airport left two people critically injured early Wednesday. The single-engine Piper Comanche went down at 12:40 a.m., hitting Hawthorne Boulevard and 126th Street.
Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene and found the aircraft in flames with two people on board. Neighbor Gerald Johnson, who rushed to help, described pulling a man from the wreckage while attempting to extinguish flames on his body.
Authorities believe the plane was descending toward the airport when it crashed. The tail number was traced to a previous owner who confirmed selling the plane a few weeks prior. A mechanic had reportedly inspected the aircraft after the sale. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the Hawthorne Airport plane crash.
