Two Injured as Car Crashes into Costa Mesa Apartment Building

SANTA ANA, CA (April 21, 2024) — Two drivers were hospitalized on Saturday after one of their vehicles struck an apartment building in Costa Mesa.
The Costa Mesa car crash occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and Center Street.
According to the Costa Mesa Police Department, the accident happened when a Honda traveling west on Center Street failed to yield the right of way to a southbound Mercedes-Benz on Placentia Avenue. The impact caused the Mercedes-Benz to veer off the road and crash into a nearby apartment building.
“The Honda broadsided the Mercedes-Benz, which then lost control and collided with the apartment structure,” a police spokesperson was quoted by local news as saying. Both drivers were taken to a local hospital with injuries reported as non-life-threatening.
Additionally, an individual inside the apartment was injured due to the crash but did not require hospitalization. The collision resulted in significant damage to the building, with emergency services quickly covering a large hole in the wall with wooden boards.
Authorities have closed southbound traffic on Placentia Avenue at W. 19th Street as investigations continue, and motorists have been advised to avoid the area. The debris from the crash was visible from overhead, indicating the severity of the impact.
