Waymo Unveils Safety Insights, Leads with Fewer Crashes in Autonomous Shift

CALIFORNIA (September 5, 2024) — Waymo, the autonomous vehicle arm of Alphabet, has launched a “road safety data hub” to showcase the safety achievements of its driverless car fleet operating across California and Arizona. The newly launched website reports that since 2020, Waymo’s vehicles, numbering around 600, have been involved in 192 collisions, with 18 resulting in injuries.
The data on the site reveals that Waymo’s autonomous cars have a significantly lower rate of serious incidents compared to human-driven vehicles, boasting 72% fewer injury-causing crashes, 84% fewer airbag deployments, and 51% fewer police-reported accidents across its operations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.
This Waymo road safety data hub initiative emerges alongside new regulatory efforts by the California DMV, which seeks to tighten collision reporting requirements for autonomous vehicle operators to match those of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The proposed regulations are part of a broader push for increased transparency in the autonomous vehicle industry, which may soon include testing driverless big rigs.
Despite its strong safety statistics, Waymo continues to address challenges and public concerns regarding the behavior of its driverless vehicles in emergency situations and urban environments.
