Orange County Teen and Friend Die in Watercraft Collision on Illinois Lake

(June 20, 2024) — A tragic accident on Lake Marie near Antioch Township, Illinois, claimed the lives of two girls Tuesday evening.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that the 16-year-old driver, a resident of Lake Forest in Orange County, and her 13-year-old passenger from Long Grove, Illinois, were riding a Yamaha WaveRunner at high speeds when they collided with a speed boat operated by a 55-year-old Illinois man.
Witnesses stated that the personal watercraft was heading directly toward the boat, which could not avoid the crash. Both girls were thrown into the water and rendered unconscious. They were wearing life vests, allowing the boat’s occupants to rescue them and administer first aid.
Despite efforts to save them, the girls were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No other injuries were reported from the Lake Marie accident.
