National City authorities have reportedly taken 27-year-old Jamal Lee into custody without bail. This is after he was charged with hit-and-run, murder, and DUI in connection with the death of 54-year-old Tina Smith, a mother of five.
The fatal incident happened on Plaza Boulevard last weekend when Lee, allegedly speeding with a blood alcohol level of 0.186 — more than twice the legal limit — struck Smith as she attempted to cross the street. Instead of stopping, he reportedly drove to his apartment, parked, and fell asleep.
At Tuesday’s court hearing, all five of Smith’s children were present, clutching photographs of their late mother, while friends and community members offered their support. Judge Yvonne Campos ordered that Lee’s face not be shown in media coverage, citing public safety concerns.
A driver who witnessed Lee’s reckless driving followed him to his home and provided photographs of the damaged vehicle to police.
Prosecutors sought bail of $5 million, but the judge raised the amount due to the risk posed by Lee, whose next court appearance is scheduled for April 17.
