Our 43-year-old client was a devoted father who began each day by making pancakes for his 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. Weekends were spent exploring local parks, teaching his kids to ride their bikes, or enjoying ice cream together at their favorite shop. Since the passing of his wife, he had become the steady source of love, support, and stability for his children.
Everything changed one fateful Monday morning. As our client was driving to work in Santa Ana, California, he was rear-ended at full speed by a negligent driver operating a delivery truck for a major pharmaceutical company.
The forceful impact propelled his car into the vehicle in front of him, causing his body to violently lurch back and forth. His face struck the deployed airbags and shards of glass pierced his skin. In that horrifying moment, his knees instinctively braced against the sudden compression, as his vehicle crumpled like an accordion. First responders had to extricate our client from his damaged vehicle before he could be transported to the nearby hospital.

Dad Suffers Major Injuries from Santa Ana Truck Crash
Immediately following the rear-end accident, our client experienced dizziness, confusion, and a brief loss of consciousness. He exhibited symptoms of extreme pain in his head, neck, back, and right knee. The pain radiated from his neck down to his lower back, accompanied by tingling sensations in both his left arm and legs. He also had a large laceration on his left arm that necessitated sutures for wound closure.
His painful symptoms worsened as he was transported to the emergency room, where medical evaluations, including CT scans, were performed to assess the severity of his injuries.
Following exhaustive physical examination and diagnostic imaging, it was determined that he sustained closed head injuries from the Santa Ana truck crash, including trauma to the brain. In addition, multiple annular fissures and disc protrusions were identified throughout his cervical, lumbar, and thoracic spine. He also presented with a nasal fracture and a significant contusion to his right knee, further complicating his ability to perform daily activities and exacerbating his overall discomfort.
Compounding his condition was the presence of a prior lumbar spine injury. Although he had been asymptomatic for an extended period before the Santa Ana truck crash, the traumatic impact of the accident significantly aggravated his symptoms. The rear end collision exerted considerable stress on his pre-existing lumbar injury, resulting in excruciating pain that rendered him incapacitated.
Given the serious injuries, our client faced a long and challenging recovery that lasted for two years, during which he frequently had to take time off work for medical treatment. His recovery plan included specialized brain injury therapy along with detailed neurological evaluations to monitor his cognitive function and progress. He underwent an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion to address the issues in his cervical spine and relieve the intense pain he was experiencing.
For the nasal fracture, he had a closed reduction to ensure the nasal bones aligned correctly during the healing process. Alongside these procedures, he received multiple cervical and lumbar epidural steroid injections to help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain in his back.
To support his recovery further, he participated in an intensive physical therapy program aimed at rebuilding strength, improving his range of motion, and helping him regain his functional abilities.
Following all these evaluations and treatments, our client developed concerning symptoms predominantly localized in his right leg, including debilitating pain, swelling, increased sensitivity, and a burning sensation.
Follow-up evaluations showed that our client was suffering from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a life-long chronic pain condition often triggered by nerve injury in the affected limb, damaging the thinnest sensory and autonomic nerve fibers. These small fibers transmit pain and temperature sensations. Damage to these fibers result in altered pain processing pathways, causing a heightened sensitivity to pain and temperature stimuli in the affected limb.
To effectively manage CRPS, our client underwent both physical and occupational therapy aimed at improving his mobility and daily functionality. He had to considerably limit his activities with his children, resulting in fewer outings to the park and a reduction in any activity that could exacerbate his pain. He further participated in psychosocial and behavioral therapy to address the emotional and psychological challenges associated with living in chronic pain.
Max Settlement for Commercial Rear-End Collision
The aftermath of the Santa Ana truck crash was incredibly tough for our client’s children. They were still reeling from the loss of their mother when they nearly lost their father. Throughout the two long years, their father was there physically, but emotionally and mentally, it felt like he was slipping away. Family outings to the park were replaced by a reality filled with doctor appointments and therapy sessions. The medical bills were mounting.
The initial accident settlement offer from the pharmaceutical company’s insurance did not come close to capturing the pain and suffering our client endured and the financial strain of being in and out of work.
After a year-long back-and-forth, we managed to negotiate a $2 million settlement for commercial rear-end collision, a much-needed relief for a family that had already gone through so much.
