LOS ANGELES, CA – A tragic traffic accident in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, resulted in one death and several injuries Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred around 5 p.m. at the intersection of First Street and North Chicago Street, just steps from the LAPD Hollenbeck Station.
According to police reports, a speeding truck collided with a parked vehicle and flipped onto its side. Three women riding in the truck’s bed were violently ejected, while another passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors who witnessed the accident said the occupants of the vehicle were acting recklessly, and the driver appeared intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. After the impact, clothing and personal belongings of the victims were scattered across the street.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was arrested just a block away by police officers. The injured victims were transported to a nearby hospital and are in stable condition.
LAPD detectives are now investigating the exact speed of the truck and whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
