Bakersfield City Council Addresses Vacant Nuisance Registry Ordinance [Bakersfield, CA]

BAKERSFIELD, CA (February 16, 2024) — The Bakersfield City Council has intensified its battle against urban blight in the city’s older core by implementing a Vacant Nuisance Registry Ordinance. 

This new ordinance targets owners of unused, empty buildings in downtown and Old Town Kern, mandating them to file paperwork with the city and prominently display signage listing their contact information.

Passed by a 5-2 vote, the Bakersfield vacant nuisance ordinance requires property owners to submit plans for vacant properties left unused for at least 30 days. Failure to comply may result in fines or liens against the owners.

Vice Mayor Andrae Gonzales emphasized the ordinance as a vital tool in the city’s anti-blight efforts, aiming to combat issues such as squatting and arson. While enforcement measures are being developed, the city prioritizes collaboration with property owners to revitalize neglected properties.

Possible enforcement actions include fines, liens, and even bulldozing abandoned structures. As a last resort, the city may resort to eminent domain takeovers.
