Grandfather Shot in Walmart Parking Lot After Minor Collision [San Bernardino, CA]

SAN BERNARDINO, CA (February 14, 2024) — The San Bernardino County community is mourning the loss of 59-year-old Jonathan Mauk, a grandfather who was fatally shot following a minor fender bender. 

The tragic event unfolded on the evening of February 5th in the parking lot of a Walmart in Highland, where Mauk had gone for an errand.

While navigating the parking lot for a space around 8 p.m., Mauk’s vehicle gently collided with another car as it backed out of a spot. The impact, described by officials as minor, led to a couple of scratches on the vehicles. 

In an attempt to address the situation, Mauk exited his vehicle to apologize to the other driver. However, the situation took a devastating turn when the other motorist, identified as 36-year-old Shawntece Norton, allegedly discharged a firearm at Mauk, striking him in the face, and then fled the scene.

The San Bernardino Police Department, led by Capt. Nelson Carrington, is actively investigating the case of the grandfather shot in Walmart, seeking justice for the victim and his grieving family. This senseless act of violence has left the community in shock, highlighting the unpredictable nature of road rage incidents.
